ALOPECIA (HAIR LOSS)

ALOPECIA (HAIR LOSS)

Androgenetic alopecia is the most common cause of alopecia (loss of hair from the scalp) in men. It starts with a specific pattern, usually in the temporal area, then at the top of the scalp and finally these two areas merge. It is due to heredity but also to the effect of androgens on the hereditary "sensitive" hair follicles. There is also androgenetic alopecia which affects women, it has a different pattern of development, but the exact same etiology.

There is also androgenetic alopecia which affects women, it has a different pattern of development, but the exact same etiology.
The classic treatments we have are:

  • Dietary supplements with vitamins-traces-minerals-amino acids: These provide the "building blocks" of keratin to strengthen the hair (and nails). Thus, the hair grows "bulky" and is stronger and healthier. The head that has now better quality hair looks fuller
  • Minoxidil spray or foam: this medicine locally inhibits an enzyme at the root of the hair. This enzyme is responsible for the conversion of testosterone into a more aggressive form, which "kills" the hair.
  • Finasteride pills: They do the same thing as minoxidil lotion, but are even more effective because they are an internal (systemic) treatment.

The most modern development in the treatment of alopecia is AUTOLOGOUS MESOTHERAPY.

Autologous mesotherapy (PRP) in the treatment of alopecia - hair loss

PRP is plasma containing over 300-350,000 platelets/uL. It is isolated by the process of centrifugation, after taking a small amount of blood from the patient (20 to 40 ml).

The PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) treatment is based on the use of growth factors that are released from the platelets contained in our blood (we cause the release of the growth factors from the platelets using a special activator solution). These growth factors are natural components of our body. These are proteins that are contained in platelets with the ability to enhance the regenerative and anaplastic of tissues that are malfunctioning or have suffered some damage. The growth factors reactivate the adult dormant stem cells of the area (with the ultimate goal of creating new hair follicles), activate the proliferation of cells in the area resulting in better blood supply to the scalp area.

The first results which are immediately noticeable are the improvement of the quality of the hair.

Strengthening, greater diameter (thickening) and length is observed in the hairs we already have on our scalp.

In this way, our head looks fuller as each hair has more volume and shine and health!

PRP hair loss treatment can be applied to men and women with androgenetic alopecia (a tendency to recede and lose hair due to heredity). The results of the method are completely natural, while there are no side effects since the body's own blood is used (autologous procedure).

In addition, the treatment can be applied preventively, as it prevents further hair loss, while strengthening the existing ones.

It combines perfectly with the existing proven and effective treatments we have for androgenetic alopecia such as the use of topical minoxidil solution or foam or the use of oral finasteride.

The application of the method should be repeated every 4-6 weeks during the first year, and then once a year to maintain the result.

What is androgenetic alopecia?
Androgenetic alopecia is the most common cause of alopecia (loss of hair from the scalp) in men. It starts with a specific pattern, usually in the temporal area, then at the top of the scalp and finally these two areas merge. It is due to heredity but also to the effect of androgens on the hereditary "sensitive" hair follicles. There is also androgenetic alopecia which affects women, it has a different pattern of development, but the exact same etiology.

How much hair do we normally lose every day?
It is normal to lose 50-100 hairs daily. The phenomenon is more intense at certain times of the year and has no impact on the appearance of our scalp because it regenerates

At what age does androgenetic alopecia start?
In 25% of cases it starts at a very young age even at the age of 21. In our experience, the earlier the alopecia starts, the more severe and aggressive it is, so appropriate treatment is required.

Can androgenetic alopecia be prevented?
Unfortunately, no. However, there are specific rules that ensure the best possible health of our hair. These should be followed by all of us but especially by people who have a hereditary predisposition to alopecia. Avoiding the frequent inconvenience of hair drying with a hair dryer, avoiding ponytails, using mild and medicated shampoos and finally a proper diet are very beneficial for the health of our hair.

Can wearing a hat or helmet cause or worsen the appearance of alopecia?
This is completely unfounded. There is no scientific evidence that wearing a hat or helmet causes hair loss (alopecia). Nevertheless, for good scalp hygiene, we recommend not to abuse the use of helmets (eg more than 7 hours per day).

Can intense stress or an intense traumatic experience lead to the appearance of androgenetic alopecia?
No. Androgenetic alopecia is an inherited condition related to androgens. Intense stress can lead to a sudden loss of hair from the head (scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes) but with another disease called alopecia areata (what the world calls "hair eater")

What is Finasteride (Propecia)?
It is an antiandrogen drug that is taken in pill form. It is the most powerful therapeutic weapon at our disposal for the treatment of severe and aggressive androgenetic alopecia. It succeeds in stopping the extension of hair loss but it can also succeed in restoring and strengthening some hairs that had started to atrophy. It can also be combined with other topical treatments

What is Minoxidil (Regaine)?
It is a medicine in the form of a spray that dilates the blood vessels in the scalp. With correct and continuous use of the drug, we can stop the phenomenon of hair loss. It is a treatment suitable for men and women.

Can nutritional supplements (amino acids, vitamins, trace elements) help treat alopecia?
These elements are the structural components of keratin which structures hair and nails. Strengthening our body with them provides us with a hair richer in volume, a stronger and healthier hair.
