INSTRUCTIONS FOR HEALTHY NAILS

Our nails reflect our overall health, which is why proper nail care is so important. Below are tips to keep your nails healthy:

  • Keep nails clean and dry.
  • Cut the nails straight. Use nail clippers or nail clippers. Round the nails slightly at the ends for maximum strength.
  • Do not bite the nails or remove the cuticles. Doing so can damage the nail.
  • Do not use your fingernails as a tool eg to open tin cans (soft drinks).
  • Trim nails regularly. By keeping them close, you will minimize the risk of injury and damage.
  • When the nails are thick they are difficult to cut. soak your feet in warm salt water. Mix one teaspoon of salt per liter of water and soak for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Avoid handling and interfering with ingrown toenails (when the nails tend to dig into the skin on the sides of the nail), especially if there is an infection and wound. It is best to visit a dermatologist for treatment.
  • Wear shoes that fit the foot properly. Also, rotate the shoes you wear every day.
  • Always wear flip flops in the pool and public showers. This reduces the risk of fungal infections that first develop on the sole but can then affect the nails as well
  • If your nails show a significant change such as becoming very thick (hyperkeratosis), changing color, swelling or pain at the tip of the finger, see your dermatologist, as these may be signs of a serious dermatological problem. Especially if you have diabetes or poor circulation in the extremities, it is especially important to seek immediate treatment for any nail problems.
